“Look for purpose and let that purpose drive you. Purpose gives direction when the world feels chaotic. It transforms ADHD from a challenge into a compass.”
Restless Beginnings
Since young, I was often labelled the “hyperactive boy” — always running around, never sitting still. People found it hard to follow my train of thought and often called me random.
I first became aware of ADHD in Secondary 3, when my mum handed me some materials on the condition to pass to my teacher. That was when I discovered I had actually been formally diagnosed back in Primary school.
Academically, I managed to do well, but school was not easy. Teachers grew frustrated with me for sleeping in class or failing to pay attention. When the syllabus grew heavier, I struggled to keep pace, and it took me far longer than my peers to complete assignments.
The differences in how I thought and behaved also made me a target for bullies. Their discrimination and ostracisation left deep marks. It was painful and traumatising, but it forced me to adapt and build mental resilience. Those hard lessons gave me the social adaptability I now rely on in my professional life.
Turning ADHD into an Edge
When I entered business, I had a revelation: There are many ways to succeed, and the best way for me was to lean into my natural tendencies. Being outgoing and energetic, I learnt to use those traits to leave lasting impressions.
As a professional emcee, ADHD has become one of my greatest assets. On stage, I can swiftly draw links between seemingly unrelated points, making content flow naturally and keeping audiences engaged. It also gives me a unique edge in humour — spotting connections others miss and delivering punchlines that land with impact.
Hosting isn’t just a job; it’s a calling where my ADHD strengths shine. What once made me stand out awkwardly in school now helps me stand out meaningfully on stage.
Resilience and Adaptability
Living with ADHD has taught me resilience. Growing up with challenges and setbacks forced me to adapt constantly. Those experiences built versatility, which I believe gives ADHDers an edge. We learn to pivot quickly, juggle multiple perspectives, and thrive in ways neurotypical folks may not expect.
While I do hope society becomes more empathetic and understanding, I also see ADHD as a source of strength. It pushes us to grow tougher, to harness creativity, and to embrace adaptability as part of our daily lives.
Advice to My Younger Self
If I could go back, I would tell my younger self: Look for purpose and let that purpose drive you. Purpose gives direction when the world feels chaotic. It transforms ADHD from a challenge into a compass.
