Singapore Academy of Law – The Strength of ADHD in Law (November 2022)

ADHD in Older Adults, Media coverage
November 30, 2022

ADHD, often associated with restlessness and hyperactivity, may seem incompatible with the demands of the legal profession. However, individuals with ADHD can thrive in this field, as evidenced by the experiences of those interviewed. Wong Siew Hong, a partner at Eldan Law attributes his restless nature to his ADHD wiring and acknowledges its positive impact on his work. After being formally diagnosed with ADHD 15 years ago, it explained the challenges he had faced throughout his life and provided him with a deeper understanding of himself.

Moonlake Lee, the founder of Unlocking ADHD, urges those in positions of authority to recognize and utilise the strengths of individuals with ADHD, fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. Conversations that focus on strengths rather than negative labeling can boost the self-esteem of individuals with ADHD, who often face criticism and misunderstanding due to their restlessness and racing thoughts.

With the right conditions and support, individuals with ADHD can excel and thrive. Ahmad Nizam Abbas, from Crescent Law Chambers, recalls how his ADHD wiring played a role in his productivity during the COVID-19 circuit-breaker, leading to the completion of a book he had been sitting on for years. These stories demonstrate the potential for individuals with ADHD to harness their unique abilities and utilise them as strengths. Read the full story here.
